Clip-On vs Button-On Suspenders
Posted by Walter Schulz on Oct 10th 2026
Clip-on suspenders are best for convenience: they attach to any pants in seconds and suit casual wear, work, and travel. Button-on suspenders are best for hold and polish: they never slip off, leave no marks, and look sharper with suits and dress pants. If you want the secure hold of buttons but your pants have no buttons, no-sew clip-on buttons give you the best of both.
Below we compare the two side by side so you can choose with confidence, whether you are dressing for a wedding, a long shift, or a flight.
Clip-On vs Button-On at a Glance
| Feature | Clip-On | Button-On |
|---|---|---|
| Works with | Almost any pants, shorts, or skirt | Pants with suspender buttons (or add no-sew buttons) |
| Hold | Good to very good, depends on clip quality | Excellent, will not pop off |
| Speed | Fastest, on and off in seconds | A little slower to fasten |
| Look | Casual to smart casual | Classic, formal, tailored |
| Fabric wear | Can leave small marks on delicate fabric | No marks on the fabric |
| Best for | Jeans, work pants, travel, everyday wear | Suits, tuxedos, weddings, heavy daily use |
How Each Attachment Works

Clip-on suspenders use small spring-loaded jaws that grip the top of your waistband. You simply open the clip, press it onto the fabric, and close it. Better clips have teeth or a two-point grip that bites into the fabric without tearing it.
Button-on suspenders end in leather or fabric tabs, often called ears, with a buttonhole. They fasten onto buttons sewn inside the waistband of your pants. Because the button passes through a hole, there is nothing to slip, so the connection holds no matter how much you move.
Both styles come in X-back and Y-back designs. If you are not sure which back to pick, see our guide to X-back vs Y-back suspenders.
Clip-On Suspenders: Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Work with nearly any pants, no buttons or sewing needed
- Fastest to put on and take off
- Easy to move between outfits during the week
- Plastic clip versions are airport friendly and will not set off metal detectors
Cons:
- Cheap clips can slip or pop off under heavy movement
- Can leave small marks on fine fabrics like wool suiting
- Look less formal with a suit or tuxedo
Not all clips are equal. Mars clip suspenders include strong single clips, plastic clips that grip in two spots, and 2-pin clips built for thick work pants and denim. If your clips keep coming loose, our guide on how to stop suspenders slipping has quick fixes.

No Buttons on Your Pants? Use No-Sew Buttons
This is the number one reason people pick clips over buttons: most store-bought pants do not have suspender buttons. You do not have to sew anything to fix that.
Our no-sew clip-on buttons clamp onto the waistband in seconds and give any pair of pants a secure button. The clip sits behind the suspender ear, so only the button shows. One six pack covers a full X-back or Y-back setup, with spares.
That means you can wear button-on suspenders with jeans, chinos, or rented tux pants and still get the full button-on hold.

Which One Should You Choose?
| If you are... | Choose |
|---|---|

| Working a physical job in heavy pants | 2-pin clips or button-on |

| A bigger guy who needs maximum hold | Button-on (with no-sew buttons if needed) |
| Wanting one pair for many different pants | Clip-on |

What About Belt Loop Suspenders?
There is a third option many people do not know about. Belt loop suspenders wrap around your pants' belt loops and snap shut. Like clips, they work on almost any pants. Like buttons, they cannot slip off and leave no marks. They are a great middle ground for jeans and work pants.
Getting the Fit Right
Whichever attachment you choose, the right length matters just as much. Suspenders that are too short pull your pants up uncomfortably, and too long means they sag. Check our suspenders sizing guide to find your length by height, or call us at 414-212-5851 for help.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are clip-on or button-on suspenders better?
Neither is better for everyone. Button-on suspenders give the most secure hold and the most formal look, so they are best for suits, weddings, and heavy use. Clip-on suspenders are faster and work with almost any pants, so they are best for casual wear, work, and travel.
Are clip-on suspenders bad for your pants?
Good quality clips are not bad for most pants. On thick fabrics like denim and work pants they leave no lasting marks. On delicate fabrics like fine wool suiting, clips can leave small impressions over time, which is why button-on suspenders are preferred for suits.
Do clip-on suspenders stay on?
Yes, quality clip-on suspenders stay on well for everyday wear. Clips with teeth, a two-point grip, or two pins hold much better than flat, cheap clips. For very physical work or a heavier build, button-on or belt loop suspenders hold even more securely.
Can you wear button-on suspenders without buttons on your pants?
Yes. No-sew clip-on buttons clamp onto your waistband in seconds and give you a secure button to fasten to, with no sewing needed. Only the button shows once the suspender ear is attached.
Are clip-on suspenders appropriate for a wedding?
They can be, especially for a relaxed or rustic wedding. For a formal wedding with suits or tuxedos, button-on suspenders look more polished and are the traditional choice. If the rented pants have no buttons, no-sew buttons solve that easily.
